B-Team Sequel: To James Cameron s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Terminator 3 terminator movie#
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is a big, dumb movie filled with big, dumb people. Awesome, Dear Boy: Once the T-X was established as female, the nouveau role of a female Terminator became incredibly coveted, with about 10,000 actresses auditioning for it. Things get complicated when a whiny young irritant named Kate (Claire Danes) locks John into an unhygienic dog kennel and refuses to even worm him. Kristanna Loken co-stars as the ruthless Termanatrix, a superior model of robot with, I think you’ll agree, a superior bare backside, altogether less hairy, not nearly as Austrian, with smooth, clean lines and a… anyway, back to the synopsis.Īrnold must protect John Connor (Nick Stahl) not only from the Terminatrix, but also, because the kid is a supremely annoying presence, from all those who want to slap him, and that encompasses everyone who has ever met him. Well, to be clear, the cockroaches show up naked as well, but without the little glowing ball of energy.) The point is, humanity’s loss is our gain, as Terminator 3 offers another chance for Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger to show off his prodigious acting chops. Just don't expect it to rewire the summer-blockbuster machine.Robots sent from the future into the past to kill people who will one day become important to the war against machines are like cockroaches – no matter how many of ‘em you kill, there’s always another, showing up one day naked in a little glowing ball of energy (the robots from the future, not cockroaches. Whatever.įun actioning from Mostow and Arnie, with enough in there to give the franchise a new spark of life. We reckon most of the budget was spent on CG-ing out Mr S' wrinkles. But sometimes Arnie's more comic relief than fierce protector, and the self-mockery very nearly sucks the moody, apocalyptic atmosphere away completely.Ī bold climax offers some rectification, although it does arrive rather quickly and you might be wondering exactly how T3 was the "most expensive movie ever greenlit". A vein of humour is always a good thing in a summer smash-banger, especially as Matrix and Hulk lacked it. But at times you have to wonder if he's trying too hard to parody his former incarnations. Which means she spends the first half either screeching or blubbing.Īnd the big man himself? Well, it's good to see Arn back in black. Claire Danes does her best as the token gutsy female but, despite being told by John that she reminds him of his mum, she's more Sarah Connor in T1 than T2. Eight years ago, the machines who rule the future sent an unstoppable Terminator to. But he quickly descends into a whining weakling. 'T2' grossed 204+ million, and now Golden Globe-winner Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in the highly anticipated third chapter in the blockbuster franchise, directed by Jonathon Mostow ('U571,' 'From the Earth to the Moon'). Nick Stahl's John Connor is initially intriguing: a dropout who lives "off the grid" in case any other automatons are shunted his way.

The human element doesn't fare a lot better.

You can't ignore the shiver of anticipation that accompanies the Oak's reappearance in those trademark leathers and you can't help but punch the air with glee as the Arniebot piledrives into his electrorival for the first time. The similarities to T2: Judgment Day run deeper than that but there's no denying they provide a strong comfort factor for the audience. And at one point, our heroes ignore the advice of their Arnie-shaped protector to ride back into danger for the benefit of a parent.
Terminator 3 terminator series#
You have a plot structured around a series of balls-out chase sequences, big explosions and brutal, 'bot-on-'bot smash-ups, punctuated by desert-set scenes of the main characters pondering their doom. You have two protagonists: one savvy to their destiny and prepped for survival, the other wide-eyed, terrified and forced to re-evaluate their life (in this case, Claire Danes' vet, who's dragged along for the ride).

You have two Terminators - one state-of-the-art, the other "obsolete", as Arnie puts it. Terminator 3 ain't a sequel or a prequel.
